[marron]Summary[/marron]
The work of Estelle Disch illustrates an essential aspect of the function of art. Art per se is called upon at times to respond to invisible, unspeakable reality. That impossible, traumatic reality took place in Argentina in the form of the disappearance of people. Might one see images of what occurred in the former School for Navy Mechanics (ESMA) somehow detached from the gruesome details of that horror? This is where art enters the scene. Using infamous spaces in the ESMA – Capucha, Maternidad, el Sótano – Disch transforms these spaces into images that evoke the horror without directly showing it. She invites the viewer to engage with their own imaginations in the service of empathy, education, and, hopefully, Never Again. Her images can be seen at www.estelledisch.com
